Loner Poem
IMAGINE YOU ARE THE LONER BOY, WRITE A POEM, TO EXPRESS HOW YOU MIGHT FEEL AND WHAT YOU MIGHT BE THINKING, AS THE LONER BOY.
Lying against the wall,
I felt eyes staring at me.
Ants crawling all over me,
Feeding on me inside out.
Looking around,
I found that I was alone.
Forever trapped in this hole.
Never to see the light again.
Cold as it always has been,
I never had a decent shelter,
From rain, lightning and thunder.
Lost like a wandering soul.
I never had a hand to hold,
Never had a chance to share
My darkest secrets.
Forever being this way.

What are your impressions of the boy, as well as the children in the poem? Support your answer with relevant lines from the poem.
My impressions of the boy are that he is anti- social and lonely though he does want to have friends whom he can rely on. The loner does not interact with others at all. But instead always lean against the wall and never play with others. From this quote: “Smacks his hand against the bricks” and “And other boredom-beating tricks” tells us how lonely and bored the loner is. He is so bored that the pain from hitting the wall becomes his ‘entertainment”. I can tell that he wants to have friends because he always stay at the wall, waiting for someone to invite him to play with them. If not, he could have stayed at home so that he would not be gossiped by others. Instead, he chose to stay there, thinking that he could have a chance of letting others acknowledge his existence. But, none of the children gave him a chance.
My impressions of the children are that they are quite heartless and unfriendly to the boy. The children did nothing to break the ice with the loner but instead “We pass him and never speak”, thinking that a loner will always be a loner. Thus ignores the loner's existence though he has been always been at the wall. They are unfriendly to the boy because they do not care about how the boy feels, but “In slow huddled groups, low talking” gossips about the boy. “And a place at the wall”, “For who won’t belong” tells us that the children has always thought that due to the boy’s difference, they could actually ignore and hurt his feelings. But they are wrong because everyone is equal.

Do I sympathize with the Joker?
Yes, I do sympathize with the Joker because he did not actually want any of this to happen. Did you know why Joker became like this? It was all because of all the failures he had encountered and the news of his pregnant wife’s death that contributed to part of his insanity. He actually had good sides of him. In the book: The Killing Joke, he only agreed to help the criminals to break into the plant where he formerly worked in because he was desperate to support his family. Secondly, though he did wanted to back out of the plan, he was strong-armed by the criminals into keeping his promise thus he had no choice. "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... if I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha!" tells us that he did not really wanted to be like this and if he could choose his past, he would not choose to be Joker. So we should not blame him for turning into Joker as it was his past that turned him into a monster and also he had no control of his own future like everyone else. Though he did countless crimes, he still deserves to be sympathized as he is not totally to be blamed and his insanity might had engulfed the good sides of him.

What have I learnt from this lesson?
I learnt that though first impressions do count, it is still very important to know a person better as the first impressions may not be really the person's real personality thus we must not judge a book by its cover. We should also look at a person in different ways as everyone is not perfect. For example; though Batman was just trying to locate Joker in the show 'The Dark Knight' but the way in which he dealt with the problem was similar to the way how some villains do things. But in fact, Batman was just trying to do what is best for Gotham City. Lastly, we should not let our past affect our future like what happened to Joker instead we must learn how to let go and continue with our lives.
